WILDERNESS 40.

Forty hot days in wild wilderness;
Forty cold nights in an arid desert -
It would have truly seemed to me,
To be a long forty confusing years.

Driven away like the very first Adam;
Losing himself so as to find himself -
Surrounded by jackals and vultures;
Ignored by food-bearing ravens of old.

A jackal stepped forward, Diabolos,
To harass the prone wasting man -
Skin burned red by unrelenting sun;
Lips cracked by the hot blowing sand.

"Since you're the son of God the Creator,
Make bread to eat from this dead rock!"
"It says within the scroll of Deuteronomy:
'Thou livest not upon mere bread alone!'"

"Since you are the son of God Almighty,
I'll give you the World if you bow to me!"
"It says within the scroll of Deuteronomy:
'Worship the Lord, and the Lord alone!'"

"Since you are the son of God of Hosts,
Jump from on high that they'll bear you!"
"It says within the scroll of Deuteronomy:
'Thou shalt cease putting us to the test!'"

The jackal then slunk back into the rocks;
Abiding until a more vulnerable moment.
