A Small Prayer

We thank you for the crops in the field.
We thank you that they came to maturity:
That they survived drought and flood;
That they were not lost to heat and cold;
That neither pest nor weed overcame them.

We pray that the weather for the harvest be fair.
We pray that tractors and combines work smoothly.
We pray that the farmers be kept safe in their labors,
As they work every day, all day, to bring in the crops.

We thank you for the Spirit of Abundance in your World -
Forgive us for our small spirits of scarcity in our hearts!
We thank you that we have plenty to give to others -
Forgive us please when we live in fear and uncertainty!

 Amen and AMEN.

Meteorological Fall

The calendar speaks of time remaining,
A brief remnant at summer's tail-end;
Yet the sighs of the corn tell a tale,
Of dry wind and combines being readied.

Beauty doesn't fade away -
It matures and it ripens:
As it is perfected by nature;
As it is sanctified by love;
As life slowly transforms it,
Into a vision only newly seen,
Once beheld by eyes once blind.

Lament for the Day

Children who are not children -
murdering children so casually;
YOUR children die in our streets!
Do they know what they do?
Is life so bereft of value now?
Why do You let your children,
shoot Your children in Chicago?

Brave and valiant Protectors,
living in fear and frustration,
killing their wards in our streets!
Do they know what they do?
Are black lives of lesser value?
Why do You let your children,
shoot Your children in America?

Zealots and Pharisees abound;
bringing purity and genocide,
through cruel human sacrifices!
Do they know what they do?
Does religion give them value?
Why do You let your children,
kill and crucify Your children?

Dear Tim:

The very first thing is this:
     That you entreat for everyone;
     That you pray hard for everyone;
     That you intercede for everyone;
     That you give thanks for everyone;
Even for politicians and your leaders!

So that:
     They may live quiet lives (and therefor you as well);
     They may live peaceful lives (and therefor you as well);
     They may live holy lives (and therefor you as well);
     They may live dignified lives (and therefor you as well);
This is good and right in the eyes of the Lord!

The Lord desires that everyone be saved, and
The Lord desires that everyone know the truth:
     There is but one God; and
     We have only one Advocate -
          Fully human, yet fully divine;
          Son of Man, and Son of God;
          Jesus, the Christ, the Messiah;
               Who handed himself over to Injustice;
               Who submitted himself to the Inquisitors;
               Who allowed himself to be tortured by us;
               Who gave himself and his life for all of us!

For this I was made a Witness,
For this I was made a Reporter,
For this I was made a Teacher -
     To those of other nationalities,
     And to those of other ethnicities,
     And to those of other religions.

The Thrill Is Gone

The thrill is gone!
Sorrow weighs me down.
My heart is failing.

Hear my people crying out,
In war-torn foreign lands, and
Here on violent city streets?:
"Is there a God? If there is,
Why does He do nothing?"
(O why did they trade God,
For cheap and easy baubles,
And other false, hollow gods?)
"Winter is coming all too soon,
Election Season draws to an end,
And we are surely doomed!"

Their hurt hurts me.
I cry over their pain.
Do they have no health care?
Do they have no pharmaceuticals?
Do they have no physicians?
Do they have no insurance?
Why then is their health so bad?

May I be a spring of living water,
And my eyes be flowing fountains,
That I may weep all day long, and
That I may weep all night long, for
My murdered children!

The Oath

The Lord has sworn an oath!
"I will never forget you!"

You who:
stomp down on the downtrodden;
ruin the ruined ones and places;
play the game to win at any cost;
stack the deck and deal the cards;
profit from the hardship of others.

"I will remember you."

Are You Willing to Pay the Price?

The thin dusty man turned to the following mob. He quieted them by lowering his voice - they had to silence their babel to hear what he was saying to them. When they did hear, they were appalled - appalled and highly offended!

"If you want to be my student, you must first dishonor your parents - you must even hate them! You can't be my disciple if you can't give up your life as you now know it. If you are not willing to cover the costs, you can't join me in this ministry. Come on, anyone working on a project first calculates that they have sufficient funds, energy, time, and other resources (the capacity) to complete the project - otherwise, what's the point of even starting it?

To live my life and follow my way will cost you everything that you have on this planet, and all that you are. Use these numbers in your calculations before you decide to become my apprentice. Are you willing to pay the price? Are you willing to give up all that which has a hold on you?"

Then he slowly walked away, to see who was serious.
